Tips for incorporating feathers into your decorating scheme

If you're the type of person who always wants to stay up to date with the latest home decorating trends, then you should consider purchasing travertine tiles and pavers for your home and yard. These natural stone pavers and tiles come in neutral colors, so they'll always go with whatever the newest hot trend is that you decide to incorporate into your decor. One thing you may want to try out is using feathers in your decorating scheme, since, according to design experts, feathers will be all the rage this season.

For example, The Times-Picayune, a New Orleans news source, recently spoke to Devin Kirk, vice president of merchandising for Jayson Home, an upscale retailer that sells home furnishings online, who explained some reasons why feathers are gaining popularity in home decor

"The economy has made consumers feel pent up for a long time. They are ready for something a little exorbitant," Kirk told the news source. "Feathers blend nature and glamor. The two worlds rarely collide. For some they represent flight and evoke feelings of lightness and freedom."

Keeping what Kirk said in mind, here are some tips for decorating with feathers.

Don't overdo it
You don't want your house to look like a bird's nest gone wild, which is why you want to start small when decorating with feathers. Kirk recommended that you start by sticking some feathers in a vase either alone or mixed with branches and see how you like the look. Another idea you should consider is to simply tuck some feathers into napkin rings at your next dinner party.

Try out peacock feathers
Houzz.com explained that peacock feathers are some of the most popular to decorate with because they feature such beautiful colors. These large feathers can be overwhelming, so consider placing them in areas of your home that are in desperate need of color – not places that are already busy. For example, some peacock feathers placed in a vase in the bathroom can be a great look.

Use feather boas
Believe it or not, feather boas aren't just something you can wear for fun – you can also use them to decorate your home. For example, Yahoo! recommended that you try using feather boas in your bedroom over your windows instead of traditional valances. They can also make great tiebacks for window treatments such as long, dramatic drapes.

Add feathers to flowers
You can also add feathers to any flower arrangements you have in your home to give them a little extra flair. This is an especially good idea if you have many fake plants and flowers in your home that look a little dull.

Finally, it's important to keep in mind that you have to be careful about where you get feathers. Yahoo! explained that some feathers are illegal to possess, even those found on the ground. These include feathers from hawks, owls, falcons and eagles of any variety. This is why you should stick to decorating with flowers from craft stores.
