How to install Travertine around a Salt Water pool

Salt water pools have become increasingly popular due to their perceived health and maintenance advantages. However, when using Travertine around salt water pools, it is important to be aware of how salt can interact with natural stone over time.

Travertine is a porous material, and exposure to salt water can lead to surface changes if preventative care is not taken. This is sometimes referred to as “Salt Water Attack,” and it may occur in several ways:

1. Efflorescence

Salt water can absorb into the pores of the Travertine and evaporate, leaving behind a white, chalky residue on the surface. If noticed early, this residue may be removed by sweeping with a broom. If left untreated, it may require cleaning with a specialized acidic stone cleaner. Note: Acidic cleaners may alter the appearance of the stone, so it is strongly advised to test on a small, inconspicuous area before broader use. In some cases, the residue may be reduced using a nylon scrub pad and water.

2. Spalling

Spalling occurs when salt crystals become trapped below the surface of the stone. Over time, this may result in small pits forming on the surface as the crystals expand and break apart the stone’s structure.

3. Leeching

Travertine, like other natural stones, can contain trace amounts of mineral salts within its structure. When exposed to water, these salts can dissolve and migrate to the surface, potentially leaving voids behind and weakening the stone in certain conditions.

Protective Measures

To help reduce the impact of salt exposure, some professionals recommend applying a high-quality, water-repellent impregnating sealer. While sealing does not eliminate risk, it may help reduce water penetration and surface deterioration over time. Some sealers are marketed as providing several years of protection, but results may vary based on environmental conditions, usage, and maintenance.

Always follow the product manufacturer’s instructions and safety recommendations when applying sealers or cleaners.
