General Driveway Installation Guidelines
Travertine Pavers can be installed on driveways using either a mud-set or sand-set method. Each method has its own considerations depending on climate, soil conditions, and whether the application is residential or commercial. Commercial settings may require additional structural considerations, heavier-duty base materials, or alternative installation techniques due to increased load demands.
Mud-Set Method (Over Concrete Slab)
-
Excavate the area and compact the subgrade soil.
-
Add 3″–4″ of crushed limestone or road base and compact thoroughly.
-
Pour a 4″ concrete slab and allow it to cure.
-
Apply a flexible thin-set mortar such as FlexBond.
-
Lay the Travertine Pavers starting from the edge and working inward.
-
Fill joints with grout, polymeric sand, or leave them open depending on the design and installer’s recommendation.
Note: In freeze/thaw climates, always use a flexible mortar to allow for minor expansion and contraction.
Sand-Set Method (Dry-Set Installation)
-
Excavate the area and compact the subgrade soil.
-
Add 4″–5″ of compacted crushed limestone (in 2–3 layers), which provides a stable, well-draining base.
-
Add 1″–2″ of concrete sand or similar bedding material over the compacted base.
-
Install edge restraints (e.g., concrete curb, metal edging, or staked plastic edging) to hold the layout in place.
-
Lay the Travertine Pavers as snugly as possible for better support and stability.
-
Sweep polymeric sand into the joints to lock the pavers in place.
Important Considerations
-
For driveway use, smaller travertine paver sizes such as 6×12 are generally preferred due to their ability to better distribute weight and reduce the likelihood of cracking. Larger sizes may not perform as well under vehicle loads.
-
Proper sub-base preparation and compaction are essential to prevent shifting and settlement over time.
-
Drainage should be planned carefully to avoid pooling water beneath the pavers.
