Considerations for Cold Weather Climates
Travertine Pavers may perform well in cold weather conditions when properly installed and selected from high-quality grades.
For projects in freeze/thaw climates, we recommend reviewing the sand-set installation method outlined on our Installation Page. This method allows for some flexibility, which can be beneficial when dealing with seasonal temperature changes.
Travertine is a naturally porous material and, like many natural stones, can expand and contract with freeze/thaw cycles. In colder climates, rigid installations such as mud-set methods may increase the risk of cracking if the stone is unable to move slightly during temperature fluctuations. For this reason, many installers prefer sand-setting in these environments. To help secure the perimeter of your project, some professionals choose to use a flexible adhesive such as FlexBond for added stability.
Our Premium Select Travertine Pavers and Pool Coping have undergone third-party laboratory testing for freeze/thaw cycle exposure and did not exhibit visible cracking or deformation under test conditions. However, performance in real-world settings can vary significantly depending on site-specific factors, installation methods, and climate.
