Survey shows small home decor changes can impact mood

You know that good feeling you get when you come home to see your beautiful home with its elegant furnishings and travertine tiles? If not, then you may want to make some changes to your abode, since research has shown that small decor changes can affect your mood. According to a recent survey commissioned by the decor store Home Goods, 93 percent of Americans believe that a room’s decor can positively or negatively impact your mood.

The best part is, you don’t have to do a major renovation project to help you feel better. Taking on small do-it-yourself tasks, like a Do It Yourself travertine installation project, may be enough to boost your mood. According to the survey, 99 percent of people surveyed said that a simple decor update could help them feel better.

“Updating your home’s decor doesn’t have to be complicated. Easy, decorative changes that speak to personal style, like adding colorful pillows or a graphic rug, may be all you need to refresh your home and ultimately make you feel happier in your space,” said interior designer and television personality Genevieve Gorder, in a statement from Home Goods.

Tips for staying happy at home

Home Goods had some recommendations for what types of tiny changes people can make that may help them feel better at home. For example, the bedroom was found to be the space that most negatively affected people’s moods. To fix this, Home Goods suggested simply purchasing new bedding or maybe getting some colorful pillows that can help make your bed more inviting.

Furthermore, of the survey respondents who said that they had a room in their home that was making them feel unhappy, nearly half said that improved lighting may be able to fix the problem. Along with looking for new lamps, you should consider searching for new window treatments as well that can let in more morning light. These individuals also said that they believed a little pop of color could help them enjoy their rooms more. If you have bland, white walls, you should think about hanging some interesting art on them, or adding stripes of color to give your home more life.

House Beautiful magazine also had some ideas for simple changes that can make a major impact inside your home. For example, if you have a very modern home, you should make yourself buy one traditional thing, such as brass candlesticks or a classic ceramic bowl, which can add a little extra flair and character. Also, the news source recommended adding a long bench at the end of your bed, which will help make it look more finished.

Finally, 22 percent of people who responded to the Home Goods survey said they believed that getting more organized could help them improve how they feel in their home. You can organize your home better by purchasing a variety of containers that can help you store items that are traditionally shoved into the bottom of your closet.
